Although it is the Rio Carnival that receives most attention abroad, it is no less celebrated in Fortaleza. The streets seem to explode with millions, joyfully dancing and singing non-stop. Trio Eletricos', open top trucks, drive through the streets carrying bands, followed by crowds of people all dancing and singing along.
In Brazil, you can find Carnival celebrations the whole year round and Fortal, with its one a half million participants, has got to be the biggest 'out-of season' Carnival. In Avenida Beira-Mar, you will find the revellers dancing to the Carnival rhythms behind the trios eletricos and fifteen Carnival street bands. The festivities take place during the last week of July and last for fours days.
